I have to say, everyone I know who knows Linux system administration is doing incredibly well. I gave references last week for a former employee of mine who is in that area. He ended up with two jobs competing for him.

Even if you're just studying Linux at home and built your own router, etc. you should be able to find some decent jobs. I know we were hiring those folks at $18/hr in San Jose as summer interns a few summers ago.

Even as a windows guy I had no problem getting multiple offers in NYC, and jobs here are scarce. There are a ton of people up for every job, but its at least and area where people are hiring.
